EXAMPLES FROM LAST YEAR'S ONLINE UPDATES
The very first update of the season – which is often the longest, as it includes Paul’s thoughts from his many summer stable visits – included the following:
“A couple more who caught the eye around the yard (Paul Nicholls) included No Drama This End, a four-year-old brother to El Muchacho and last season’s bumper winner Monty Bodkin.” – he won a bumper on debut @ 100/30
“One who didn’t make the book but looked well when I visited (Olly Murphy) was Junker d’Allier. The five-year-old failed to win in three bumpers but is a good looking son of Kapgarde, with plenty of size about him and it wouldn’t be a shock to see improved form as a hurdler this winter.” – he won his first two starts over hurdles and again at Perth in the spring
“….Jagwar looking as though he is starting to fill into his huge frame (Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero). Still only five, he was a little disappointing last season but looks as though he should come into his own over fences and could be well treated on a mark of 118. If he has strengthened up – both physically and mentally – he could be in for a fruitful campaign.” – he won 4 times from 5 chase starts, including on trials day (@ 4/1) and the ‘Plate’ (@ 3/1)
Horses to follow from Lucinda Russell’s stable: “Michael Scudamore went for Point-to-Point winner Jet To Vegas, who is a lovely stamp of a horse. I was quite taken with him physically, prior to Michael nominating him…..he is very much one to note on Rules debut.” – he won twice over hurdles in the New Year, latterly in the Premier Kelso Novices’ Hurdle @ 16/1
“As for last week’s action, Potters Charm impressed when winning a Worcester maiden hurdle with ease. He is probably the best novice hurdler to have run in England so far this season.” – he won his next 3 starts, including the Grade 1 Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree
Update 3 (second week of October) included:
“Nicholls seems to have his horses ready for the start of the campaign and Captain Teague’s third in the Champion Bumper is a standout piece of form here [Persian War Novices’ Hurdle]. Whilst it looked like it could be a really competitive race at entry stage, the more I look at, the more I would like to think that he could be up to the task, despite his hurdling inexperience.” Captain Teague won the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle by over nine lengths.
“The Welsh Champion Hurdle is another potentially very good handicap, with 22 horses currently entered. The Leading Prospect in there is the Kelly Lee-trained Nemean Lion, who – from a mark of 135 – is a horse who I think is capable of winning a valuable prize such as this…..If he runs, I would be hopeful of a positive start to the season.” Nemean Lion won the Ffos Las contest at odds of 3/1
5th March Update included:
“I’m sure Alan King’s six-year-old, Favour And Fortune, wants better ground and with that in mind, Aintree or Ayr (Scottish Champion Hurdle) could be more suitable.” Favour And Fortune landed the Scottish Champion Hurdle on his next start after Cheltenham @ SP 5/1
10th April Update (pre–Aintree’s Grand National Meeting) included:
“One horse who I have already backed (ante-post) for this race [Topham] is Arizona Cardinal, who races prominently, comes back in distance slightly, tends to jump well and relishes testing ground. He also represents an in-form stable in the shape of Stuart Edmunds (4 winners from his last 8 runners) and I am hopeful that he will take to the course.” Arizona Cardinal landed the Topham @ 20/1
