Published from early-October right through to the end of the National Hunt season, Paul analysis is invaluable.
EXAMPLES FROM LAST YEAR'S ONLINE UPDATES
The very first update of the season – which is often the longest, as it includes Paul’s thoughts from his many summer stable visits – included the following:
“An unraced name for the notebook is Milou du Chenet, a three-year-old by Choeur du Nord who will likely be campaigned in National Hunt junior hurdles in the coming weeks/months.” – won both of his first two starts over hurdles.
“Hopes also seem high for expensive purchase (top lot at the same sale, £400,000) Cristal d’Estruval, whilst Le Frimeur is one who doesn’t feature in the book itself but looked a nice sort in how he moved on the sand gallop and also in how he disposed of six rivals in March.” – the former won both of his starts over hurdles whilst the latter won a Grade 1 at Punchestown @ 18/1.
“Freshers Week cost just £50,000 after winning a four-runner race in the spring. By Crystal Ocean, he is expected to be ready a little earlier and actually holds an entry at Market Rasen on Tuesday.” – won on debut at Market Rasen @ 10/1.
“Some schooling took place and one who really caught the eye was former Irish Points winner Hold The Serve, who jumped nicely under Sean Bowen. He was the other horse who his trainer selected to follow.” – he won three of his five starts over hurdles.
“Lewis Saunders nominated Sticktotheplan, winner of a Listed novice hurdle at the Galway Festival and one who takes his chance in tomorrow’s Persian War at Chepstow.” – he won the Persian War at odds of 15/2 the next day.
Update 3 included:
“Fortune de Mer has the pick of last season’s bumper form and looks sure to leave behind his recent hurdles debut at Uttoxeter. He wears a first time hood, has won at the track (second time out) and was thought good enough to contest the Champion Bumper in March.” He won the Grade 2 Sharp Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham that weekend (14/1).
“Emma Lavelle’s Ma Shantou is another who I will be keen to pay close attention to…. The hope is that, being only six, he will have strengthened up again over the summer and from a mark of 129, appeals as the type to land a nice prize at some stage this season.” He won that weekend at Cheltenham, as well as twice more before the end of the season, including the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle.
4th March Update included:
“Another to note from Ireland is The Mourne Rambler, who I was very positive about in the Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide… the son of Well Chosen looks to be a likely leading player here and is still available at 16-1 in places” – he won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at an SP of 15/2.
“I must give a mention to last year’s Dawn Run winner Air Of Entitlement… a mark of 139 seems fair about a mare whose connections were probably thinking more down the Mares’ Hurdle route at the beginning of the campaign.” – she won the Martin Pipe at 10/1.
8th April Update (pre–Aintree’s Grand National Meeting) included:
“I can’t not give a mention to Catchintsavo, who faces a stiff task on the face of it but his bumper form is strong, particularly his Punchestown Festival third, when he chased home Monday’s Irish Grand National winner, Soldier In Milan, and Cheltenham Festival winner King Rasko Grey.” - finished runner-up in the Grade 1 Sefton at odds of 33/1 (available at 80/1 earlier in the day).
“Bossman Jack who looks set to run in the Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. Sixth in the Baring Bingham at Cheltenham, he would have finished much closer but for a final flight mistake. …. That was a huge step forward on his earlier form over 2m and with the ground unlikely to pose any problems, I expect a very big run and would be quite hopeful of him adding to his tally.” – he won the Grade 1 Mersey (11/4).
